I just came across a collection of books I used to love when I was a kid. I know this probably makes my sound a bit like an odd child, but The Country Kitchen Library was a set of small books that would keep me up late into the wee hours of the morning as a teenager. Most kids were reading Goosebumps under their covers after the lights were out; I was reading how to brew my own beer. I never got around to brewing beer or any other such beverage before I was of legal age (I’m not just saying that to avoid prosecution for a crime that has long since expired its statute of limitations; I just never got around to it back then.) I did make one five gallon batch of grape wine before I was out of high school, but then I ran off and joined the navy and spent the next eight years traveling the world and sipping top shelf whiskeys and could never find the time again. It wasn’t until recently that I (much like Stella) got my groove back. I was just leafing through the Making Wines, Beers, and Soft Drinks booklet, and can’t wait to start making some of these long forgotten recipes. I just came across a simple recipe for honey ale that I believe I will start to brew this week. It is only a small one gallon batch, but shockingly simple, and I am hoping tasty as well. I’ll update later in the week with the recipe and a recap of this artisanal adventure.
